Training: Asylum and Immigration Training Series: Asylum Seekers and Detention
Location: Zoom
Date: Thursday, April 22, 2021
Time: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET
Asylum is a form of protection available to people fleeing persecution in their home countries due to their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
For many reasons, some asylum-seekers are placed in removal proceedings—and sometimes, in detention—before they are able to apply for asylum. This training session is intended to prepare pro bono attorneys whose clients are detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a portion or the entirety of the client’s defensive asylum case.
Topics include: practice before the Immigration Court, particularly the Baltimore and Arlington Immigration Courts; expedited removal; credible and reasonable fear interviews; bond; parole; and other alternatives to detention. The faculty will include experienced immigration practitioners who focus almost exclusively on detained removal defense before the Immigration Court. The training will include a mock bond and/or asylum hearing.
