Training: Asylum and Immigration Training Series: Asylum Based on Membership in a Particular Social Group (PSG)
Location: Zoom
Date: Thursday, April 29, 2021
Time: 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET
Persecution based on membership in a Particular Social Group (PSG) can serve as the basis for asylum relief. This program focuses on the meaning of particular social group membership and developments in the law affecting asylum eligibility based on PSG membership. Case law under the previous administration attempted to narrow the definition of a particular social group in the context of family membership and in the context of domestic violence. The panels will discuss in depth decisions from the previous U.S. Attorney General, including Matter of A-B- and Matter of L-E-A-,that have tried to restrict asylum eligibility based on particular social group membership. The program will address new developments in the law and practices to successfully represent asylum claims based on domestic violence and family membership. The program will also review any changes under the current administration affecting PSG membership.
This training is appropriate for attorneys, attorney/paralegal teams, and law students. Due to potential conflicts preventing pro bono case placement, this training is not open to government employees.
